What is RSS? RSS is most commonly translated as "Really Simple Syndication." It is a format that is used to publish frequently updated web pages - such as blogs, news headlines, audio files, video files and podcasts. The RSS document is usually referred to as a "feed." The feed includes summarized text about the updates, publishing information and authorship. You can subscribe to the feed to keep up-to-date on the web pages.
Why would you want to use the RSS feature of a web page? It works like a magazine subscription. Instead of going to the newsstand (think website) everyday to see if a specific magazine (web page) has been published (updated), that magazine (web page) is automatically sent to your home (computer) when it has been published. This allows you to get website/web page updates without having to visit the website just to see if anything has changed or been added.
How do I subscribe to an RSS feed? You will need a "feed reader" to receive and read web pages that contain an RSS feed. GoogleŞ Reader is just one of the many readers available and easy to learn and use. It is web based and works the same on all computer platforms. Here is a link to a good video that explains this process and talks about setting up a "feed reader." Go to: http://www.myctap.org/web20/what-is-rss.cfm
How do I subscribe to an OMS professional development calendar? If you look at the bottom right corner of each calendar in the OMS you will see a small orange logo that represents the RSS feed for that calendar. You may subscribe to the professional development calendar(s) for an entire organization like a county or district office, or just an individual group within an organization just by clicking on that logo. Note: Make sure you have set up your feed reader first!
